In this article, we will show you how to download and install Altera Quartus II 8.1 Web Edition for Windows, as well as how to set up a license file and specify the device support files. Follow these steps to get started with your FPGA design project.

Step 1: Download the Software and Device Support Files

To download Altera Quartus II 8.1 Web Edition for Windows, go to this link and click on the "Download" button. You will need to create an account or log in with your existing account to access the download page.

You will also need to download the device support files for the FPGA device that you want to use. You can find them on this page, under the "Device Support" section. Choose the device family that matches your device and click on the "Download" button.

Save the software .tar file and the device support files to the same temporary directory on your computer.

Step 2: Extract the Files and Run the Setup

Use a file extraction tool such as WinRAR or 7-Zip to extract the files from the .tar file. You should see a setup.bat file and a quartus folder in the extracted directory.

Double-click on the setup.bat file to start the installation process. Follow the instructions on the screen to select the installation directory, accept the license agreement, and choose the components that you want to install. You can also customize the installation options by clicking on the "Advanced" button.

The installation may take some time depending on your system configuration and internet speed. Wait until it is completed before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Set Up a License File

Beginning with version 8.1, a license file is no longer required for Altera Quartus II Web Edition software. However, if you are using an older version of the software, you will need to set up a license file to activate it.

To obtain a license file, go to Intel FPGA License Center and request a free license for Quartus II Web Edition software. You will receive an email with an attached license.dat file and instructions on how to create one if you cannot receive email attachments.

Save the license.dat file to your computer's hard drive and make a backup copy of any existing license.dat file for future reference. Then, start Altera Quartus II software and click on "Tools" > "License Setup". Specify the license file location at "License File", which is \license.dat, where is the full directory path to the license file, starting with the drive letter. For example, d:\flexlm\license.dat.

Step 4: Specify the Device Support Files

To use Altera Quartus II software with your FPGA device, you need to specify the device support files that you downloaded in step 1. To do this, start Altera Quartus II software and click on "Tools" > "Options". Under "Category", select "General" > "Device Support". Click on "Add Device Family" and browse to the directory where you extracted the device support files. Select the device family that matches your device and click "OK". Repeat this process e0e6b7cb5c
